Westmorland is one of a 39 traditional counties of England. Its independent towns come Ambleside, Appleby-in-Westmorland (the shire town), Kendal, Kirkby Stephen, Milnthorpe and Windermere.

A county contains big area of the Lake District National Park. Inside 1974 it was combined with Cumberland and parts of Lancashire and Yorkshire to create Cumbria.

Like than existence divided into hundreds, Westmorland was subdivided into two baronies of Westmorl& (or another time Appleby) and Kendal. These were farther subdivided into ii wards each — Westmorland into the East ward and West ward, and Kendal into Kendal ward and Lonsdale ward.

Westmorland is however utilized as a placename. There are a Westmorland Gazette, the Westmorland County Agricultural Show, and a Westmorland Shopping Centre.

Within June 1994, when extensive consultation by having a public, a Local Government Commission published Draft Recommendations for the complete restoration of Westmorland as an administrative county for administrative ceremonial purposes. The food and drug administration has however to heed their recommendation therein regard.
